They Don't Really Feel Pain
They Don't Really Feel Pain
This assemblage sculpture explores a racial bias that assumes people of color do not feel pain as intensely as whites, an assumption underlying abuses by medical and law enforcement authorities. Research indicates this enduring bias originated during slavery, and continues into the present. However, most people with this mindset do not recognize it in themselves, which allows for a certain “innocence” of the systemic problem.
